The 4th October 2014 saw the opening of ‘Thatcher’s Barn Theatre’ with the presentation of ‘Rock this Country’, a handclapping, foot stomping, fun filled afternoon and evening of ‘good olde’ country music.‘Rock this Country’ was a flashback of country music from the ‘Golden Oldies’ of yesteryear through to the popular modern country music songs of today.
The show was produced by the very talented vocalist, music and drama teacher Angela Val Verde. Angela originally hails from California, and is now living in Durban where she runs her owning acting school, OCA (On Camera Acting). This form of teaching helps to give her students confidence as well as teaching them about potential Film/TV acting.
Included in the cast was vocalist, Simone Mann from Durban, Jaziel Vaugh’hann, fondly known as Jaz, JJ Strydom, the Western Cape Cowboy as he describes himself and Young Melanie Van Rensburg, a 13 year old up and coming, highly talented young vocalist from Ladysmith, appeared alongside all the mature and very experienced artists and held her own in every way.
‘Rock this Country’ was held in order to raise funds and awareness for the Ladysmith Animal Anti-Cruelty League. Previous barn dances have been held in order to raise funds for various other charity organizations. The Vryheid Hospice received a cash donation, the Dundee Centre for Intellectually Challenged Adults benefited from clothes and groceries, and a school at one of the local settlements benefited from new and second-hand books which all formed the ‘entrance fee’ for their respective events
